Dutchman Dave Huismans returns to his 2562 nom-de-plume for the first time since 2012 with his latest full-length, The New Today. This record steps aside from the dance floor work under his A Made Up Sound title, instead opting to explore a world of narrative collage, drawing together elements of new age, musique concrete, electro pop and Krautrock. An unusual set of influences are connected through his own singular vision, adding another sterling effort to this essential artist’s impeccable back catalogue.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1 kHz | Time – 00:45:47 | 527 MB | Genre: Pop, Electronic
Official Digital Download – Source: WEB | @ Domino Recording Co

During the lengthy Feel It Break tour, Austra expanded from a trio to a six-piece, which allowed for more interplay among the band. This expansiveness helps Katie Stelmanis and crew find more creative and nuanced ways to explore the contrast between their chilly synth-pop and her huge, passionate voice on Olympia. Though the album’s much fuller, smoother sound might be the first things listeners notice, Stelmanis’ more personal lyrics are a close second; both shine on the single “Home,” where she cries “you know that it hurts me when you don’t come home at night” over pianos that switch from flowing balladry to rhythmic pop stabs. It’s as though having a bigger crew around her allowed Stelmanis to dig deeper into her feelings than she did on Feel It Break. While she’d sound compelling singing almost anything, the tremulousness of her voice, coupled with Olympia’s direct pleas and accusations, give Austra a new level of emotional impact. Stelmanis revealed that she listened to early Cat Power while writing these songs, and there’s a similar heart-on-sleeve quality to her singing and words; it doesn’t get much more naked than song titles like “You Changed My Life” and “Hurt Me Now,” and her voice stretches up heartrendingly on “What We Done?” and “Reconcile.” As Stelmanis gets more vulnerable and approachable, the rest of Austra becomes more refined and elaborate on Olympia. It’s arguably a more sonically beautiful album than the the band’s debut, with more organic elements mixed into their dramatic electro-pop, either blending like the marimbas on “Fire” or creating bold juxtapositions like the strings and dubstep-like bass on “Forgive Me.” There aren’t as many obvious singles like “The Beat and the Pulse” and “Lose It” here, though standouts like “Painful Like” and “Annie (Oh Muse, You)” are among the most danceable tracks here. Instead, Austra opts for a more balanced and poised version of the sound they set forth on Feel It Break; even though that album’s rough edges and raw nerves were a large part of what made it so potent, Olympia feels like the beginning of a more sustainable, and versatile, direction for the band. ~ Heather Phares

Bjork has recorded many albums, under many different agendas, but there hasn’t been one as openly honest, vulnerable, yet powerful as this. As a follow up to Vespertine; that narrated the magical nature of falling in love, this is a diary entry of coming out the other side, her break-up with her partner Matthew Barney. Co-produced by Arca and The Haxan Cloak, the cinematic string arrangements, and the hiccuping percussion, alongside her lyrical confrontations and confessions, bring together a collaboration that is both symbiotic and dynamic. Written during the nine month period before her relationship ended, the first three tracks illustrate the confusion and denial on the impending break-up, while the following tracks move through the phases, ‘Black Lake’ drowns you with questions and pounding driving percussion, while ‘Family’ has The Haxan Cloak’s sound of the universe ripping apart. The last three tracks shed the dead skin, and the track ‘Atom Dance’ emerges featuring Antony Hegarty, with her ‘dancing towards transformation’. The last track on the album ‘Quicksand’ is a collaboration between Bleep’s own Spaces, where they have re-arranged his track ‘Apologies’ (that was released on his Spaces One EP), into a track of stuttering salvation. This is an incredibly sincere work, where she channels all of her strengths and struggles into an album that demands the listener to be as receptive as her in listening to it.

Ghostly International presents the third full length entitled Psychic 9-5 club from Australian Outfit HTRK. With the group now consisting of just Nigel Yang and vocalist Jonnine Standish following the tragic death of former band member Sean Stewart, Psychic 9-5 favours a reflective, minimalistic palette over the grizzly edges of 2011 LP Work (Work, Work). Damped, dub tones launch ‘Give It Up’ which develops a deep emotional atmosphere with Standish’s weightless vocals whereas ‘Chinatown Style’ pushes the feeling further with sparse, considered electronic percussion. It is this reductionist ethos that gives Psychic 9-5 Club its raw power and undisputed sincerity.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1 kHz | Time – 01:13:22 minutes | 859 GM | Genre: Electronic

M83’s lush, expansive sound already made their albums feel twice as big as they were, so an actual double album from Anthony Gonzalez and company was inevitable. However, on Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, he doesn’t use that extra space to top the widescreen nostalgia of Saturdays = Youth; instead, he fills it with songs that cover more sounds and moods than any of M83’s previous work, resulting in a collection of impressionistic moments rather than a grand statement. The album begins with two songs that reaffirm Gonzalez’s flair for the unapologetically epic music that makes him a rarity among artists in the 2010s, electronic or otherwise. He recruits Zola Jesus’ Nika Roza Danilova for “Intro,” and her unusual mix of frostbitten edge and vulnerable warmth channels the huge emotions Gonzalez favors perfectly. Meanwhile, “Midnight City”’s sleek neon tones show just how far he’s traveled from Saturdays = Youth’s ornate sound. However, the album’s first disc goes even farther afield with the tender piano instrumental “Where the Boats Go”; “Raconte-Moi Un Histoire,” where a child imagines a world where everyone turns into jungle frogs over bouncy synths and guitars, and “Soon, My Friend,” which ends the first half of the album with symphonic grandeur and Beach Boys harmonies. Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’s second disc sounds more traditionally M83, from the triumphant-yet-heartbroken “My Tears are Becoming a Sea” to the thrilling rush of “New Map” and “Steve McQueen.” Despite the sprawl of the album’s size and sounds, Gonzalez holds everything together with wide-eyed enthusiasm. He handles most of the vocals here, singing with a yelp that evokes Howard Jones on “Reunion” and “OK Pal” — and while this album is as indebted to the ‘80s as Saturdays = Youth was, it somehow feels less steeped in nostalgia. Gonzalez displays his uncanny knack for making unfashionable sounds fresh again with “Claudia Lewis”’ un-ironic slap bass and “Splendor”’s children’s choir; it takes guts to use these sounds and brains to use them well, and fortunately, he has both. Unlike Saturdays = Youth’s wall-to-wall epics, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming offers ebb and flow, with interludes like the dreamy “Echoes of Mine” and “Klaus I Love You” tipping the album’s balance toward atmosphere instead of pop songs. More than any of M83’s other albums, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming feels like a destination to explore; while it may not be quite as striking as Saturdays = Youth, it delivers a welcome mix of classic sounds and promising changes. ~ Heather Phares

As the name suggests, much of Vapor City, the second album from EDM whiz Travis Stewart’s Machinedrum project, is bathed in aural fog. But where 2011’s Room(s) messed with hyper, drum-machined-driven Chicago footwork, here the rhythms veer toward rolling drum and bass breaks, and the mood is a lot more relaxed. Drums underpin samples that loop and build and vary with purpose — see “Baby It’s U,” which Stewart distorts and smears into ever-more-lovelorn shapes. He makes them sound like songs, not just tracks — all the better to go with his own sung “U Still Lie,” a slushy goth/New Wave ballad for the ages.

Vercetti Technicolor’s ficticious soundtrack to the 1972 Munich Massacre, is a bleak, cold and somber work. Partly inspired by the 1999 Documentary
by Kevin Macdonald, Vercetti creates a tense and brooding approach to this, the most darkest of subject matter. This is far from dancefloor material, this is doom-electronics at it’s most frightening.
Giallo Disco is proud to present our first LP, Vercetti Technicolor’s Black September, closer to minimal wave than moroder and all the better for it. Remixes come from Mexico’s PLAYTONTO and Créme Organisation signing’s Francesco Clemente. Artwork by Eric A. Lee, Mastered by Alek Stark at Fundamental Audio.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44.1 kHz | Time – 00:47:00 minutes | 555 MB | Genre: Electronic
Studio Master, Official Digital Download |  Source: WEB | Artwork: Front cover | @ Delsin

The word “Vril” first appeared in The Coming Race, Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1871 novel about a subterranean civilisation. There’s also a theory that it was later adopted by a group of German occultists called The Vril Society. But those with more of an interest in bleak techno than black magic will associate it with another shadowy cabal: the artists of Germany’s Giegling label, whose offshoot, Forum, released this otherwise nameless producer’s debut album, Torus. Vril has also forged his own apocryphal tales: Delsin, who released his second album, claim the 2014 Vortekz EP was so heavy it caused the mastering machinery to crash. It’s a story you’re more likely to believe after listening to Portal, an album that makes you feel like you’re being dragged deep into the bowels of the Earth.

Cranked right up, these tracks have real elemental force. The unforgiving stomp of “Portal 1″ sounds like it could have come from the Cretaceous period as much as early ’90s Berlin, and the album as a whole seems as monolithic as a slab of stone. Sometimes it’s a bit too cold: “Portal 6″ might make you feel like you’re repeatedly smacking a brick wall. Yet much as the vril inThe Coming Race was a liquid with magical powers, so Vril can create real marvels when he bends some of the more rigid structures and lets things flow, as he does on “Portal 3,” where melodic stabs carve space around whip-cracking percussion. Vril’s talent for making something fluid out of solid sounds is best displayed on “Portal 7,” where a track that begins murky and fogbound eventually opens up into something echoing, cavernous and vast.

It’s that sense of scale that makes moments of Portal near-sublime. It needs powerful speakers to really do it justice, and even then, many might regard these tracks as little more than the bedrock for a remorseless techno set. But the crushing heat and pressure Vril brings to his productions means that, in the right hands at the right times, this music can feel as thrilling, fiery and dangerous as dancing on hot coals.

Submotion Orchestra – Alium (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1 kHz |  651 MB | Genre: Dubstep, Electronic
Official Digital Download – Source: Bandcamp |  Front Cover

Since forming in Leeds in 2009 Submotion Orchestra have carved out their own special place in the UK’s ever-changing musical landscape. The 7 piece band’s fusion of bass heavy electronica, jazz, soul and much more besides has made them a favourite of the likes of Gilles Peterson, Trevor Nelson and Jo Whiley, whilst their live show has seen them play festivals around the world and sell out venues such as London’s famous KOKO.

Now following two critically acclaimed albums, Finest Hour and Fragments, Submotion Orchestra return bigger, brighter and bolder than ever with Alium; their first album for Counter Records. Released on November 3rd, Alium sees the band in an expansive mood as the interplay between their electronic and acoustic sounds has become more natural than ever, whilst Ruby Wood’s vocals continue to find new levels of emotion.

Written over two years in the remote Welsh countryside with just ‘passing sheep and a rusty ping-pong table for company’ and recorded in Brighton, Alium has been a true group effort with every band member involved in the writing and recording process, something that is reflected in the album’s varied nature.

From neon synth strafed opener ‘Awakening’, to the bruising 21st century soul of ‘Time Will Wait’, the tense cinematic drama of ‘Bring Back The Wolf’, ‘The Hounds’’ late night/early morning jazz workout and the unashamedly big pop moment that is ‘Trust Lust’, Alium may be a dazzlingly eclectic record showcasing the band’s myriad talents, but thanks to producer Ruckspin’s deft touch remains a satisfyingly coherent whole.

With a busy summer schedule that will see the band play over a dozen festivals in 7 different countries and a full UK tour lined up for later in the year Alium looks set to cap a triumphant year for the band as they continue to push the boundaries of what an ‘electronica’ band can and should be.

“CLUB SECRETO” reminds us that Gotan Project’s music grew out of dance music culture. Their first album went from being an underground favourite on the international tastemaker DJ circuit to a word of mouth, million selling hit album that heralded the revival of Tango on the world stage.
Like a kind of musical speakeasy, “CLUB SECRETO” offers plethora of exotic cocktails: Digital Cumbia de Buenos Aires (Lagartijeando), Baile Funk carioca (Sandrinho), Tropical Bass (Poirier), Tribal House (Michel Cleis), Deep Techno (Alex James), Soca from Berlin (Daniel Haaksman) Swing made in Paris (Nicolas Repac), Hip Hop from Tokyo (DJ Muro), etc … And finally ends with a “version” an acoustic remix made in Tucson Arizona by Calexico. Following a notorious flirtation with alternative rock, Moby returned to the electronic dance mainstream on the 1997 album I Like to Score. With 1999’s Play, he made yet another leap back toward the electronica base that had passed him by during the mid-’90s. The first two tracks, “Honey” and “Find My Baby,” weave short blues or gospel vocal samples around rather disinterested breakbeat techno. This version of blues-meets-electronica is undoubtedly intriguing to the all-important NPR crowd, but it is more than just a bit gimmicky to any techno fans who know their Carl Craig from Carl Cox. Fortunately, Moby redeems himself in a big way over the rest of the album with a spate of tracks that return him to the evocative, melancholy techno that’s been a specialty since his early days. The tinkly piano line and warped string samples on “Porcelain” frame a meaningful, devastatingly understated vocal from the man himself, while “South Side” is just another pop song by someone who shouldn’t be singing — that is, until the transcendent chorus redeems everything. Surprisingly, many of Moby’s vocal tracks are highlights; he has an unerring sense of how to frame his fragile vocals with sympathetic productions. Occasionally, the similarities to contemporary dance superstars like Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers are just a bit too close for comfort, as on the stale big-beat anthem “Bodyrock.” Still, Moby shows himself back in the groove after a long hiatus, balancing his sublime early sound with the breakbeat techno evolution of the ’90s. –John Bush

The Day Is My Enemy is the sixth studio album by British electronic music group The Prodigy. It is the follow-up to 2009’s Invaders Must Die and was released on 30 March 2015 (and for Friday-release countries is on 27 March 2015). The album will be released by Three Six Zero Music/Warner Bros. Records in the United States. The first single, “Nasty”, was announced on the band’s Instagram and Facebook pages on 29 December 2014.
The album title is a reference to the Cole Porter song “All Through the Night”, in particular its lyrics “the day is my enemy, the night my friend”, although it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that first inspired the title track. On 26 January 2015 the band released the official audio for the title track “The Day Is My Enemy” on their official YouTube channel. On 23 February 2015 the band released the official music video for the third single “Wild Frontier”.

Liam Howlett was recently asked to describe his band’s sixth studio album. “Violent is the word that keeps coming up”, was his reply. He’s not wrong. Aggression is the Prodigy’s strongest suit, their belligerence not only a point of difference, but a source of propulsion. After 2010’s curate’s-egg comeback, Invaders Must Die, the Prodigy have found their voice again and, in doing so, have actively plugged their music in to a continuum of bolshiness where punk syncs up with drum’n’bass, rock with hip-hop, dubstep with, er, psychobilly (bonus track Rise of the Eagles covers the Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster). It’s the punkiness that’s most notable. It’s there first and foremost in Ibiza, a collaboration with fellow travellers Sleaford Mods, which lays waste to the party island and its “rotten encrusted rocks”. It’s also in the barnstorming title track, featuring another bespoke contributor in Martina Topley-Bird, as well as in the refrain of Get Your Fight On (largely as you’d imagine it) or its Baba O’Riley-referencing breakdown. There are weak spots – Wall of Death regresses into formula, and there is also more than one outing for the Smack My Bitch Up beat – but this is still a full-throated return to form. –Paul MacInnes, Guardian

Eddie Jobson – Zinc: The Green Album
Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC + cue | 24bit/96kHz | 0.98 Gb
Label: Capitol Records/ST-12275 | Release: 1983 | Genre: Progressive-Electronic

Having played for the prog bands UK and Jethro Tull, Eddie Jobson decided after to start a solo career, and “Zinc” is his first album. Absolutely progressive, the tracks are often loaded and dynamic. Jobson even provides the lead vocals, which are really not bad. He plays some excellent electric violin parts, as always. The main strength are his keyboards arrangements: I’ve rarely seen a musician mastering so well the keyboards!! The keyboards sounds are EXTREMELY varied, very modern for the year and absolutely futuristic. Jobson is able to create many spacy, mellow & very dreamy atmospheres, with a sci-fi approach: the pleasant textures generate an indescribable trance state which you will not want to lose; Jobson’s technique partly resides in inserting a gentle & melodic sequencer through some floating ambience. He plays an OUTSTANDING piano solo a la Patrick Moraz: do not miss it! The rock dimension is very present, almost hard rock, as reveals the sharp electric guitars and acoustic ones (Gary Green, of Gentle Giant, is a guest musician on couples of tracks). The drums and the bass do an excellent job. Eddie Jobson still proves here that he is one of the best keyboardist of the prog scene.

Phaedra is one of the most important, artistic, and exciting works in the history of electronic music, a brilliant and compelling summation of Tangerine Dream’s early avant-space direction balanced with the synthesizer/sequencer technology just beginning to gain a foothold in nonacademic circles. The result is best heard on the 15-minute title track, unparalleled before or since for its depth of sound and vision. Given focus by the arpeggiated trance that drifts in and out of the mix, the track progresses through several passages including a few surprisingly melodic keyboard lines and an assortment of eerie Moog and Mellotron effects, gaseous explosions, and windy sirens. Despite the impending chaos, the track sounds more like a carefully composed classical work than an unrestrained piece of noise. While the title track takes the cake, there are three other excellent tracks on Phaedra. “Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares” is a solo Edgar Froese song that uses some surprisingly emotive and affecting synthesizer washes, and “Movements of a Visionary” is a more experimental piece, using treated voices and whispers to drive its hypnotic arpeggios. Perhaps even more powerful as a musical landmark now than when it was first recorded, Phaedra has proven the test of time.

Electronic trio Tangerine Dream embrace their equipment and take their audience on an actual journey through this especially good, two-part showcase recorded live in France and Britain. Featuring the early and memorable lineup of Chris Franke, Edgar Froese, and Peter Baumann, Ricochet continuously evolves to the next plateau of pulsing experimentation without getting lost or over-indulgent like other bands of the genre. This album finds the three at a time when they knew exactly what they were doing; rocking without the drums, and looking over their shoulder to make sure the audience was still enjoying themselves. For the number of albums and soundtracks this band has put out (over 50!), most fans hold onto this one because it is so energetic and timeless. It takes a snapshot of the band when they were young, influential, and at the height of the genre.

The members of Tangerine Dream continued to hone their craft as pioneers of the early days of electronica, and the mid-’70s proved to be a time of prosperity and musical growth for the trio of Chris Franke, early member Peter Baumann, and permanent frontman Edgar Froese. The three of them had been delivering mysterious space records on a regular basis, and their growing confidence with early synthesizers (the best that money could buy at the time) made them virtuosos of the genre, even as they kept things organic and unpredictable with gongs, prepared piano, and electric guitar. Rubycon has aged gracefully for the most part, making it a solid companion (and follow-up) to their 1974 album, Phaedra. The somewhat dated palette of sounds here never overshadow the mood: eerie psychedelia without the paisleys — Pink Floyd without the rock. “Rubycon, Pt. 1″ ebbs and flows through tense washes of echo and Mellotron choirs, as primitive sequencer lines bubble to the surface. “Pt. 2″ opens in a wonderfully haunted way, like air-raid sirens at the lowest possible pitch, joined in unison by several male voices (someone in the band must have heard György Ligeti’s work for 2001). Rising out of the murkiness, the synthesizer arpeggios return to drive things along, and Froese weaves his backwards-recorded guitar through the web without really calling too much attention to himself. The piece evolves through varying degrees of tension, takes a pit stop on the shoreline of some faraway beach, then ever so gradually unravels a cluster of free-form strings and flutes. The rest are vapors, your ears are sweating under your headphones, and the smoke has cleared from your bedroom. This is a satisfying ambient record from the pre-ambient era, too dark for meditation, and too good to be forgotten.

Stratosfear, the last Tangerine Dream album by the great Baumann/Franke/Froese threesome, shows the group’s desire to advance past their stellar recent material and stake out a new musical direction while others were still attempting to come to grips with Phaedra and Rubycon. The album accomplishes its mission with the addition of guitar (six- and 12-string), grand piano, harpsichord, and mouth organ to the usual battery of moogs, Mellotrons, and e-pianos. The organic instruments take more of a textural role, embellishing the effects instead of working their own melodic conventions. Stratosfear is also the beginning of a more evocative approach for Tangerine Dream. Check the faraway harmonica sounds and assortment of synth-bubbles on “3 AM at the Border of the Marsh From Okefenokee” or the somber chords and choral presence of “The Big Sleep in Search of Hades.” The title track opener is the highlight though, beginning with a statuesque synthesizer progression before unveiling an increasingly hypnotic line of trance.

© MZ/Qobuz
